So I got stopped at #TSA ~ #TravellingTips #TravellingTales

In my last blog I mentioned that I will be taking two of our own 24Ah batteries with us on a long trip.  Airline policy states that batteries must be below 100WH.  I originally wanted to bring our “Executive” 34.2Ah battery along but it is easily beyond the TSA standards of 100WH and so I decided to take along two 24ah (88Wh) batteries rather that we like to call...
Upon arriving at the TSA inspection point, I did the usual ~ take off belt, shoes, and put all our belongings into the trays ~ thing.  I asked the TSA agent if I needed to also take out my iPads, and he said “no”.  So I held my breath and shoved my backpack full of electronics and gadgets into the X-ray machine. I figured I’d be stopped, since the last time (probably 3 years ago) when I went through security, I saw the agent stop my bag in the x-ray machine and take an extra long time examining it’s contents.  To be honest, my computer pack could be construed as VERY suspicious as it has all the makings of something sinister with all the wires, and adapters, and any gadget you an think of in there!  Plus, this time it’s a whole lot worse with not one but TWO batteries in the mix.

Sure enough, my backpack was pulled from the X-ray machine for manual inspection.  After what seemed an eternity, the TSA brings the bag back to me and asks if I have anything inside that can harm him… quickly I answered “no”.  He  then rummages through my bag and pulls out 3 iPads (gotta keep the kids busy you know!). He says they need to be put separately in the bins which makes me shake my head and wonder out loud to him why the other TSA agent said it was OK to leave them in the bag? He responds that it is not ok for THAT many iPads…  I wait for him to pull out the batteries…  and to my surprise, he doesn’t.  He proceeds to close up my bag and threw it along with the iPads through the X-ray machine again. For what seems like the longest time with me expected them to pull my backpack out again for another manual inspection at any minute, my bag emerged out the other side and I was allowed to collect my belongings…
That was it...nothing further and I remember thinking...Strange.  But I had a flight to catch and so I packed up as fast as I could and left the area.

They didn’t even appear to blink at the fact that I had two batteries!  Now I can’t help to wonder if I had brought a larger battery along, if it would have mattered!

Anyone out there who got a battery larger than 100wh through TSA , let us know!! (hopefully it was one of ours!)

Until next time,
Mike Lee

Biking and powering your Tech.

We seem to get a lot of cycling or mountain biking related queries and so we thought it time to put our most asked questions into a blog. So wether you are just an "out to get fit" cyclist or a professional biker, you might find some insight here.

What would be the best battery for me to use for Notebook or Laptop device whilst cycling:

Although we don't often get a request to power large devices from a bike, there some more serious cyclists who have generators on their bike that they use to recharge their notebooks or laptops, especially when touring or planning long trips. We have found, however, that the generators are simply too small for the larger devices even though they are still using pure DC power (no inverters). In most cases, likely the best solution would be to use a battery that has enough storage that it can keep you powered up the whole way until you can come to a rest area with power, so you can recharge your battery. We recommend our "CEO" battery.

There is however a balance between using a larger battery vs a smaller battery. A larger battery will get you more time and can keep your larger devices powered, but carrying such a heavy payload on your bike during a X-country trip can become a problem. The simplest answer is probably determine how much you think you will need the extra power and for how long and then get the matching battery without going over your weight limit.

We also get the odd question regarding notebook and laptop charging options for radio operators assisting big cycling events and for this we most definitely recommend our "CEO" or just one of our many device specific car chargers as most of these requirements are vehicle bound.

What would be the best battery for me to use for my tablet or phone whilst cycling:

For most cycling ventures however, you will mostly just be carrying a smaller device like an phone or tablet with you. Our smaller batteries like the "Little Giant" would do just fine for you as it'll keep your phone charged and could still squeeze out a bit more time from your larger devices for you should you need it.

They are also fairly easy to mount on your bike if you have a bit of "Mikegyver" type brain or you could simply mail us and I am sure we could come up with something great for you.

We trust this article was helpful to all our avid cycling readers and hope you will manage to stay...

Stay powered!

Thanks,
Mike

P.S. As indicated in previous posts, we're looking in offering solar panel options to help solve the need for extra time, while staying powered almost indefinitely. Please contact us should you be interested in this option?

Battery Capacities - What To Look Out For

Hello,

I am sure that you, like me, have seen some tiny external batteries advertising 20,000 mah. Now, if you consider our smallest external battery is around 21000 mah, you’d have to wonder how a smaller sized battery can offer nearly the same mah as the larger batteries and why we don't just make ours smaller...

In a word.  It can’t.

There are a lot of factors that create this illusion but sadly, most of it has to do with marketing.   You see, the larger the mah number is, the greater the perception of how much longer the battery will last. This obviously in turn helps sell products.

So, in true Mikegyver style, we put the fact to the test. We decided to test out a competitor's battery that is advertised at 26,000 mah against our own “boss battery” at 23,000 mah.

We put a load meter on each battery with the same exact Amperage drain and Voltage output.  Our 23,000 mah battery actually outlasted the "into circuit" battery at 26,000 mah by a full 20 minutes.

In theory, there really shouldn’t be a big difference, but it was very interesting to note that the competitor's was advertised at 26,000 mah as then they should have at the very least lasted the same amount of time.

Without getting too technical, the best gauge to determine how long a battery will work is too (believe it or not), look at it’s size.  Just like conventional batteries on the market today: The AA battery is the same voltage as the D cell battery (the larger size) but the D cell will outlast the AA by far.  Why?  Think of batteries like a cup of water.  The more water the cup can hold the longer it’ll last you.  The same concept applies to external batteries too.  There will be more electrons to flow into your laptop and thus allow you to run your laptop for longer.

Bottom line: The battery industry has tried to fool the uninformed into thinking that their battery's last longer by inflating their Mah’s.

Don’t get me wrong, there are different type of batteries that have different chemistries that could give you longer run time from a smaller package (a topic for another blog), but if the battery is small, it can never give you the same run time as a larger battery when comparing batteries with similar chemistry.

In other words, if you come across a battery that seems too good to be true it probably is.

How then, you might ask, do we really know which batteries last longer.  The answer is to actually try it out, or to use a load tester under same exact load conditions.  Which is what we do to our batteries.

If you are interested in knowing truly how long brand X is compared to brand Y?  Contact us with the battery you have in mind and we’d be glad to load test it so you can tell if you have a really good battery, or just a "wannabe" good battery.

Update on our Lawn ~ we went Solar!

Hi everyone,

I am sure you read the post I posted about our new dog that kept digging up our yard, and how I attached a battery to a transmitter that keeps dog's away from that spot?!

Well, here's the follow up:

I am truly proud to announce that our battery lasted a whole WEEK at a time! However, I was still not happy with having to recharge the battery every week. Sooooo....

Spoiler Alert!!!

We're testing out solar panels for potential combo kits with our batteries and thought it the perfect opportunity to put them to the test!

So I attached a Portable 60W solar panel to charge our 34,2AH "Executive" External Battery so that I would not have to change the battery once a week.  I am proud to announce that so far, after a week, the battery is still fully charged and the device is truly portable and maintenance free!

We would love to know what you think of our nifty device!

The solar panels are foldable, portable and will fully recharge our batteries in a day (might be less, but we're still testing :-)  )

Stay tuned for more info about our panels soon.

Stay powered up,

Mike

Cable Test: Be careful!

We have been punting the fact that we sell Genuine Cables for years now, and we do. But we wanted to put some competitor's selling "Genuine" cables to the test to make sure that we are a cut above the rest. So we got our hands an a "Genuine" Surface cable from a seller on ebay.  Sure enough when we cut the cable this is what we found:

Four individual wires. Unlike the genuine Microsoft adapters.  The cable also feels far more rubbery.

For those not so au fait with Genuine Microsoft Parts, here is what they look like:

Shielded with center positive and a small blue wire. The cable also has a far less "rubbery" feel.

So be careful of knock-off cables out there!  Especially from E-bay and Amazon.  Just because they say Genuine, they are NOT!

We only sell Genuine Microsoft Cables not knockoffs!  We also give you piece of mind knowing you've got quality cables that you can rely on when you must depend on it!

Keeping my Dog from Digging - Mikegyver style!

So our new dog LOVES to dig up our yard....

I was obviously getting a tad frustrated with the effect on my beautiful lawn, so in true Mikegyver style...Here's I solved it:

1: Mikegyver Battery-Check
2: The Petsafe indoor transmitter - Check.

3: Sealed container - Check.

For those of you who are not familiar with radio fences, it's a collar that you put on your dog.  If your dog gets too close to a transmitter, it first beeps to let them know they are getting too close.  Then, IF they proceed closer to the transmitter it gives them a very mild shock. Nothing strong enough to harm them in any way but just enough to deter them.

Radio fences are also used to contain dogs in a property when a regular fence is not feasible.

Normally, a transmitter(the saucer looking device) is put inside the house perhaps behind a sofa so that your dog or cat will not jump on the sofa. I

It needs to be plugged into an AC outlet, but because this is outside I simply plugged in our 34.2AH "Executive" External battery into the Transmitter and put it where our dog was digging!

The 34.2AH "Executive" External battery will keep this transmitter powered up for about 40+ hours straight.  Since it draws less power then traditional laptops, you'll get more time out of it.

BTW, don't pay attention to the bag of soil, that was used to fill back in the hole!  :-)

Will keep you updated on my lawn!

Stay powered up!

Sharing my Magsafe to a fellow passenger

Hi All,

...so I was on the plane coming back from my trip, happily plugging in one of our All-in-one adapter by Lind (the professional version) so I could recharge my Macbook Pro and iPhone all at the same time, when I noticed the passenger next to me pulling out his Macbook Pro too. I happened to notice that when he plugged his in though, all it could do was keep cycling from full screen brightness to low screen brightness with the Magsafe light remaining off.

Why does this happen you might ask? Well, this Boeing 777 was one of the older style planes and so only had DC outlets.  My fellow passenger was using a standard INVERTER that converts to DC, then to AC, and back to DC (using a standard Apple AC adapter).  Now you've heard me say before, that this is "BAD!".  Not only is it VERY inefficient for your device but it also overloads the Airplane power port!

Showing none of my despair, I casually handed him my Magsafe cable and said "want to borrow mine?".  This might have just saved his day as it was quite apparent that he had a Powerpoint presentation that needed finishing and he thanked my TWICE before we disembarked.

For sure I gave him my business card after he asked to see my setup and I had happily showed him my all-in-one adapter (it can plug into any power source (AC and DC) and best of all it's NOT an Inverter).  Of course I also showed him my 24AH Boss battery which I was carrying.

So the moral of the story is this: NEVER be without one of our All-in-one adapter by Lind , as you never know when you could save someone else's presentation!

Stay powered!

The differences between USB only Batteries and Batteries with high power ports…

I get a lot of questions from people asking if they can run their Surface Pro or MacBooks from a battery that has USB only output, so I thought I’d blog about it again.

Demystifying USB only Batteries vs High Power Port Batteries:

There are primarily only two types of batteries on the market:   Smaller batteries and larger batteries.  Smaller batteries typically only have a USB port (the rectangular ports you find on computers too) and these can only output 5V. The larger batteries typically have two types of output voltages. I like calling them "High power ports" and "Low power ports".

The high power ports can have a range of voltages from 9V all the way up to 20V and are usually adjustable. They are for use on larger devices like laptops and the larger tablets and usually also have a USB port for smaller devices like phones and smaller tablets that plug into these.

The low power port (or USB only battery) is a mere 5V and CANNOT be used to power larger devices. Some people think that one can up convert but this is like trying to put a motorcycle engine into a truck; there simply is not enough power from a USB port on the battery to power larger devices no matter how much up converting you try.

The bottom line:

So the bottom line is that USB only batteries are meant for smaller devices and NOT larger devices like the Surface pro 3,4/Book or MacBooks, no matter how much up converting you do. The higher power port batteries, however, CAN drive all the larger devices AS WELL AS the smaller devices with minimal down converting.

All our Batteries including the “Little Giant” all have a low power port (USB) as well as a high power port that will drive any large devices. They differ only in the amount of time you will get out of each battery.  The “Little Giant” was given it’s name because it’s size is actually pretty comparable to other batteries on the market that are intended for smaller devices ONLY and that have USB ONLY and yet it is ALSO capable of high power output like our larger batteries such as the “CEO” or “Executive” batteries.

Next topic of discussion…

Why are there so many different batteries on the market with such a wide range of “mAH” and “AH” and what do these actually mean? Can a small battery with a higher “mAH” actually last longer then a large battery with lower “mAH”?

Mike

Alternative power options when traveling

Hello,

As we approach summer and the weather makes us want to spend more time outdoors, most of us will have more need for alternative power sources for your devices.  I myself will be taking a short working break, and the just the idea of being stuck up in the air in a flying metal tube for hours on end without my devices powered up the entire time is already giving me electronic withdrawals!  Thankfully, my symptoms are always short-lived, as I already know which battery I will be taking with me on my travels.

If this were a perfect world, I would instantly grab my "CEO" 52.8AH battery, as it would keep my laptop charged the whole trip and maybe even have enough power to charge my iPad, iPhone, Watch plus a few extra's. But we live in different times and because it's so big, it could be considered... ehm...  well, lets just say TSA would not be happy!

So, if I glance through the TSA website briefly, technically only our smaller batteries that we call the "platinum" line are below 100wh and therefore "legal".  Depending on your flight time, this should give you more than enough added time on your devices.

For me, however, ...it is never enough! I considered taking chance on our "Executive" 34.2AH battery along as we have had a few reported experiences where it has gotten through security just fine.

On the other hand there have been mixed results with security even with the legal sized batteries!  So the plan now is to carry two of "the Boss"24AH batteries.  Crossing fingers!

As the primary laptop that I will be taking with me on my trip will be my Macbook Pro 13",  I can expect to get a total of about 10-12 hours of use from it with one of our "Platinum" batteries. If I apply some power saving tips that can be found on our Twitter or Facebook pages, under #HelpfulHints, I should make it through the trip by the skin of my teeth.

*Shameless plug: I'm glad to be using our very own Genuine Magsafe cables with these that plug directly into our batteries; no special boxes or unreliable converters. Now that's Magic!

Thanks for reading and stay powered up!

Mike

P.S. I will be blogging about my trip and experiences - probably in regards to the field of travel and keeping yourself plugged into the office while away, power wise AND data wise so why not share some of your biggest headaches during your travels with me?

P.P.S:  Just want to give a short shout-out to Liesel from Kritzinger Consulting who has recently joined our team (I know my limitations).  You may have noticed our increase on the social media front and she is our lady behind the scenes. Mikegyver External Batteries work on New Surface Book i7

Hello,

We have customers using our batteries with the Surface Book i7 without problems.
We recommend you still use at 12v setting which we set too (since our batteries will supply more amps as needed then Microsoft's own adapter, other battery sellers call this "auto adjust"), but if you are high CPU user and find it not enough, the16v setting on our battery will work too.  If you are concerned about that, we can build a small box that will reduce the voltage back to 15v.  But our tests (with the Book and with prior devices) show that a 1v variance is not a problem.
